ASPECTOS CULTURALES is a Santa Fe New Mexico based firm dedicated to the preservation and sharing of many aspects of Hispanic culture particularly through the Spanish language. The two co-founders are Roberto Mondragon and Georgia Roybal.
There have not been adequate locally relevant materials available to bilingual programs. To fill that void, ASPECTOS CULTURALES was formed twelve years ago to write a publication focusing on New Mexico's Hispanic culture. The publication called AMIGOS comes on four reading levels and has pages in Spanish and English. The two basic purposes of AMIGOS are to increase use of the Spanish language, both oral and written, and to provide students with information which enables them to understand and appreciate different aspects of Hispanic culture. The articles provide portraits of role models, places in New Mexico, folklore, historic events, modern government, and related activities with each issue.
In addition to AMIGOS, Aspectos Culturales has produced a book of dichos, a social studies book, a book showing native-born Hispanics and Mexican students their similarities and 2 sets of books and cassettes with children's songs, games, and rhymes. The books contain words, music, guitar chords, and instructions.
This culturally relevant material helps Hispanic students to feel that school does indeed address their contributions as a people, foster their involvement in the school's curriculum, increase their self-esteem, and thus help to reduce the drop-out rate. |
